Airline Only Partially Reimbursed Your Baggage Claim? What to Do
Baggage claim guidance
Sometimes an airline approves a baggage claim—but only pays part of what the passenger requested.
That can leave you with another question: What do I do about the remaining amount?
Start with the airline's decision
Review exactly what the airline paid and any explanation it provided.
Compare that with what you originally requested.
For example:
Amount requested: $650
Amount reimbursed: $275
Amount still disputed: $375
Having those numbers clearly established makes subsequent correspondence much easier to understand.
Determine what's still unresolved
A partial payment can occur for different reasons.
The airline may question certain expenses, disagree about an item's value, determine that something isn't covered under its policies or request additional information.
Before responding, identify exactly where you and the airline disagree.
Make your response easy to follow
Your follow-up correspondence should generally identify:
Your original claim
The amount requested
The amount received
The unresolved amount
Why you're requesting additional review
What you'd like the airline to do
A calm, organized message is usually more useful than a long complaint containing unrelated issues.
Ask for another review when appropriate
If you believe the partial payment doesn't adequately address your claim, you can ask the airline to reconsider the unresolved portion.
That doesn't guarantee additional reimbursement. It does, however, clearly communicate what remains unresolved and what you're requesting.
BagResolve can prepare your follow-up
